Hollywood is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population
was 139,357 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S.
Census Bureau is 144,535.
Geography
Hollywood is located in the southeast of Broward County, and includes about 5-6
miles of Atlantic Ocean beach, interrupted briefly by a portion deeded to Dania

There were 59,673 households out of which 24.9% had children under the age of 18
living with them, 41.5% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female
householder with no husband present, and 42.2% were non-families. 34.4% of all
households were made up of individuals and 13.1% had someone living alone who
was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the
average family size was 3.00.
Hollywood's paved beach BroadwalkIn the city the population was spread out with
21.3% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from
45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39
years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18
and over, there were 90.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $36,714, and the median income
for a family was $44,849. Males had a median income of $33,102 versus $27,237
for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,097. About 9.9% of
families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including
18.1% of those under age 18 and 11.8% of those age 65 or over.
English is the main language, but Spanish is commonly spoken. Hollywood also has
largest French-speaking community in the United States, thanks to the French
Canadian snowbirds who flock to the city during the winter months. About 300,000
French Canadians migrate to the Greater Fort Lauderdale area every winter,
Hollywood being the destination for the majority of them . There are also large
West Indian and Romanian populations.
North of Hollywood is the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport,
portions of which are cointained within the cities of Fort Lauderdale, Dania
Beach and Hollywood as well as unincorporated Broward County.
Adam Walsh, the late son of AMW host John Walsh, was kidnapped from a Sears
department store in the Hollywood Mall in 1981.
